VB vs Java
#1
Which language do you use more often (VB or Java)?

Personally, since I started learning Java, I used VB more rare and rare until I strated developing games in Java. Since then, I haven't used Visual Basic.

I use VB.NET more currently as I find it easier to make office applications due to my lack of Java knowledge. However, as time goes on, I will begin building more and more applications with Java.

Sorry for replying to old threads.
But, I've been messing with some Swing. I must say, it is much more fun creating applications with Java than it is with VB.NET.

I agree! If you use Eclipse, you can also check out WindowBuilder (<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.eclipse.org/windowbuilder/">http://www.eclipse.org/windowbuilder/</a><!-- m -->), which will allow you to design Java applications much like Visual Studio does.

Let me tell you something; After you've figured out all those layouts, pure code will shortly become almost the same as drag 'n' drop. I must say that making applications using pure code is pretty simple. I haven't even watched tutorials on it; I just scrolled through someone's code and got it all figured out. However, if it's easier and better for you (and any other person) to use window builder, all I can say is: Suit yourself.

VB.NET is not bad, but with Java, you can create platform-independent applications. It means that it can run on any OS.

Right! Every programmer should do whatever they like to do best.

With that being said, I don't even use WindowBuilder on a regular basis. I find that it locks one within its preset templates of code. Furthermore, managing controls via code manually is definitely a better option. But for the unversed, WindowBuilder is a useful tool!

I love this feature of Java. And not only can it run on any OS, but it can also be run in the Web Browser. This widens your possible audience because not everyone is comfortable with actually downloading software.

Well, that's alright! VB.NET does tend to be easier because it looks like English. There is solid structure using words, not symbols. Of course, that's just one of the things making it so easy.

I started learning VB a while ago but i kinda lost interest because it can only do certain amount thing unless you are a genius. With Java you don't have to be a smarty-pants(well you kind of have to be) to get it to do more different programs. Even though VB is much easier to write Java is more versatile. I for one like Java better.
