Alot of times external harddrives come with two USB cables. One to transfer data, and one for power. Do you have both cables plugged in?

Hm. Well that really is strange. Did it come with a disk that contained drivers for it? Have you tried it in another computer?

Well, if you tried it in more than one computer and it doesn't work in either, then it is probably dead. You should contact the seller ASAP.

Replace the power supply in the original computer and put the original hard drive back in and all will be good Hard drives can not be swapped between computers as master drives If you need more help PM me.
