I agree! If you use Eclipse, you can also check out WindowBuilder (<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.eclipse.org/windowbuilder/">http://www.eclipse.org/windowbuilder/</a><!-- m -->), which will allow you to design Java applications much like Visual Studio does.
